A surgical procedure doctors perform, a radical prostatectomy is when all the prostate gland of a patient is removed along with some prostate tissues surrounding the gland. This is one of the procedures used for treating prostate cancer patients.
Prostates that are enlarged through BPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia or other abnormalities like a tumor restrict the urethra’s flow of urine causing a hard time voiding and severe discomfort.
Once it has been found that the cancer is only located in the prostate gland and has not spread to other parts of teh body, men are sometimes advised by their physicians to undergo a radical prostatectomy.
During a radical prostatectomy, surgeons remove the seminal vesicles and the prostate gland while the patient is under either anesthesia in the lower body parts or under general anesthesia. Surgeons may reattach the bladder’s neck to the urethra of the patient.
After going through surgery, it may be necessary for patients to wear urination catheters as they go through recovery in the hospital from prostatectomy that is radical. Usually, after the date of the surgery, patients might have to stay for one to two days after.
The risks involved in getting this type of surgery include a rectum that has been injured, erectile problems and having a hard time with the control of the flow of urine. Patients of radical prostatectomies may also have a hard time with bowel movement control.
For post-operative sexual dysfunction, remedies that are suggested by doctors include vacuum devices, penile injections, intraurethral suppositories, medications and penile implants.
